Importance Of Revealing Your Medical History To A Dentist

Revealing your medical history to a dentist on first visit is highly recommended. This is because it helps the dentist offer individualized care, as well as take precautionary measures especially if you are reactive or with other medical conditions. It is due to this reason why patients are required to fill out a medical history form when visiting a dental clinic for the first time.Dentist use these forms to identify any medical conditions that may hinder dental procedures from being carried out until they have been treated. Although it may seem like a waste of time and energy, these forms help dentists and doctors relate any health conditions for improved dental care. The forms also help the dentist when making a prescription.

What conditions should you enlighten your dentist about?

Some lifestyles such as smoking and drinking need not be left out when enlightening a dentist. These lifestyles do affect ones general health, and may also affect the form of treatment you will receive for any oral medication needed. If you have taken any over-the-counter prescription, the dentist will need to know about it. This is because some drugs may react when taken at the same time, which is a reason why doctors will ask of any other drug you might have taken before making a prescription.

Other conditions the dentist should know about include:

Be sure to discuss the condition with your dentist, and bring the prescription you are using to treat the same with you. This is because some prescriptions contain asbiphosphonates that may react with other drugs causing jaw problems and loss of teeth.

Many dental procedures cannot be undertaken on a pregnant mother until she has delivered. This is regardless of how old the pregnancy is.

Diabetic patients are highly vulnerable to periodontal diseases meaning some dental procedures may be life threatening or unnecessary. These patients may suffer from extended blood loss from a tooth extraction, hence the reason why the dentist should be brought to light about the situation. The healing response in diabetic patience is very poor, meaning some procedures may have to be postponed until the disease is dealt with first.

Hypertension drugs

Any hypertensive patient under medication should be treated with care if any dental condition arises. Drugs used for treating high blood pressure, kidney infections and lung diseases ma react with dental prescriptions leading to more problems. Discuss either is these conditions with your dentist before any procedure can be undertaken for a more personalized treatment.

Some patients may be allergic from aspirin or even anesthesia used for dental procedures. These allergies may reduce the effectiveness of a procedure, or induce more pain to the patient. It is therefore due to this reason why you should discuss about your allergies with the dentist on first visit.

Geriatric patients may suffer from loss of consciousness and even faint during a procedure. One may also faint to do a strong drug he/she is taking. Inform your dentist of this condition before anything else to avoid accidents and prevent making the condition worse.
