Early Treatment Of Dental Caries In Babies

You might find it difficult to believe that even babies are prone to dental caries and there are many thousands of reported cases a year. If left unattended, early childhood caries can cause more severe problems. It is essential that dental hygiene is taken seriously from an early age to prevent dental problems.

The first tooth appears when the baby is between three to eight months of age. And as the other teeth start appearing, the most commonly affected are the four upper teeth. The tongue manages to offer some level of protection to all the other teeth in the lower rows and at the back.

Dental caries in babies can be spotted by white spots or stains on the teeth. Take your baby at once to a dentist and get it treated before it causes further damage. Most people think that as the baby is going to lose its teeth anyway, why trouble a little baby with a dental visit. That would be the worst decision you can take.

The caries will not fade away if you neglect your baby's problem teeth. In fact, if no treatment is given, your baby runs the risk of losing teeth prematurely. Premature loss of baby teeth can cause misaligned growth of the permanent teeth that follow. It can also cause difficulty in pronunciation and normal speech, chewing food, and also could cause the face to be disfigured.

The main cause of tooth decay is the use of feeding bottles. Most parents are happy to let their little one go to sleep sucking on the bottle. Do not use the feeding bottle as a pacifier as it exposes the baby's teeth to prolonged contact with sugary substances found in milk and juices. If you have to leave the bottle in to get your baby to sleep, then replace the milk with water instead.

Sugars found in milk and juices produce acids when they mix with plaque, and these acids corrode the teeth over time. Completely avoid giving the child soft drinks that are loaded with. In addition to milk, you could give raw fruit or vegetables as a healthy snack. Milk, although loaded with sugar, definitely has more health benefits when compared to other drinks.

When your baby finishes drinking the milk, wipe the teeth with a soft, clean cloth. As soon as it is possible, shift your baby to sipping from a cup. Using cups will surely bring down the quantity of sugar left in the mouth. Breast milk also contains sugar so avoid letting your baby sleep through the night at your breast.

It is never too early to take your baby for a dental visit. Ideally, your baby should visit the dentist as soon as the first tooth comes out. You should follow this up with frequent dental check ups and practise good dental hygiene as explained by your dentist. With these measures, you might just save your baby from dental caries.
