The Goliath Tarantula is said to be the second in size among the spider varieties available. It majorly preys on birds and so does it get its name. This species is known to majorly reside in South America and prefers living in deeps burrows located in areas that are bushy and marshy. The hideaways are either made initially made by the Tarantula itself or they may take up those deserted by other animals. The female Tarantulas have their hideaways coated with a silk lining and they relax in them most of their lives without moving any far.
The bodies of these varieties have their legs measuring up to 12 inches and can weigh as much as twelve ounces. Their bodies are usually in two major colors which include dark and light brown. They do lack antennae and possess four pairs of legs with the rest of the body segmented into seven parts. The whole body is covered in hair.
The female Goliath Tarantula is sexually mature after 3 to 4 years and their average life expectancy is between 15 and 24 years. The females sometimes prey on their male counterparts which are known to die shortly after they reach their sexual maturity and they are known to live for up to a maximum of six years.
The female is known to lay up to 50 eggs in a single hatch which lay hidden in its burro for between 6 and 7 weeks during which the female guards them. Once the eggs have hatched the newborns live inside the nest until they have undergone their fast hatch.
The Goliath Tarantulas are not considered as suitable candidates for pets by most people, primarily due to their aggression to other species including humans. They also have toxin in their fangs which may cause sweating and nausea in humans which makes them unlikely to be domesticated by most persons.
A look at the spiny flower mantis care sheet
The spiny flower mantis is a native inhabitant of Kenya. It has an attractive body with a number of colors and a spiny abdomen. It is regarded as an easy insect for domestication which has meant more hobbyists taking up its custody.
Being a non-communal insect, keeping the insects together has a tendency of leading them to resort to cannibalism and therefore keeping them singly is preferred. The spiny flower mantis care sheet requires the insects to be kept in fairly high temperatures of above 25 and not over 30 degrees Celsius for good survival. The provision of extra heat may be optional in summer but is mandatory during winter when temperatures plunge lower than their require temperatures. Humidity needs to be maintained at 60 per cent for a good stay of the insects.
Housing of this mantis requires a structure that has its length dimensions three times the length of the insect and the width of the structure to be equivalent to double the length of the insect. Due to its susceptibility to both mold and fungal infections the housing structure should be properly ventilated. Having the enclosure with fake plants and flowers will make a replica natural environment to keep the insect happy and relaxed.
