Dental Care For Babies And Pregnant Mothers

If you are expecting, you need to make sure you take all necessary precautions to ensure your pregnancy is a healthy one. Eating a healthy diet, an exercise plan and prenatal care will all help you get very far with this. However, there is another step that you need to take. You need to take care of your dental health. The health of your teeth does relate to your health overall, including your fetus. During pregnancy, it is critical for you to take good care of your teeth. The main reason for this is because changes to your body might create dental complications, which will make you susceptible to some diseases and other health issues.

Dental Problems

During pregnancy, women undergo certain changes, which does make them more at risk for developing dental problems. Varying hormonal levels have a tendency to increase blood blow, particularly in the gums. This can feed dental plaque, which promotes tooth decay and gum disease. There are other conditions that you need to watch for while you are pregnancy. Make sure you discuss these with your prenatal doctor and dentist.

Pregnancy Gingivitis

One of the more common dental problems during pregnancy is gingivitis. The condition causes red and swollen gums. Some women also experience tenderness and bleeding. Pregnancy gingivitis is quite common. According to statistics, more than 50 percent of pregnant women get it. However, practicing good oral hygiene is something that can definitely help to reduce getting gingivitis while pregnant.

Periodontal Disease

Pregnancy gingivitis, if it isn't properly dealt with, can develop quickly into periodontal disease. The infection can destroy gums and can also pose even greater risks for a pregnant woman. The infection in severe cases, enters the blood stream. Then the body must release chemicals in order to fight the infection. This can induce early labor. According to studies, there is a strong correlation between low birth weight and prematurity with gum disease. Miscarriages have also been caused by dental infections.

Pregnancy Tumors

Noncancerous growths might appear on a pregnant woman's gums due to irritations caused by various dental conditions, including pregnancy tumors, gingivitis and dental plaque. These usually are harmless and disappear after birth. However, contacts your dentist if you are experiencing any discomfort or pain.

Oral Health

A good dental hygiene regimen is an important component in your prenatal care. Make sure to thoroughly brush your teeth two times per day at least and after each meal if possible. Also, floss daily to eliminate dental plaque.

Pregnant women who experience vomiting and morning sickness should rinse their mouths out with water. It helps with neutralizing stomach acid. This is important because it can destroy your tooth enamel. Also wait before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking. Acidic foods and abrasive toothpaste materials can further damage your teeth. Keep in mind that vomiting frequently weakens the teeth as well. So when you are feeling nauseated get lots of fresh air.

In addition, eating a healthy diet is very important for maintaining good oral hygiene. Get plenty of calcium, vitamin B12 and vitamin C. Avoid eating sugary snacks. These things will also help with reducing the odds that you develop dental problems.
