Every expectant mother needs to take care of herself physically and emotionally to help maintain a healthy pregnancy. This can be achieved through proper prenatal care, eating well balanced diet and exercises to keep body fluids and hormones in check. Many people neglect the need for proper dental care despite the fact that it is equally important during and after the gestation period. Hormonal changes experienced during the pregnancy period may induce dental complications which can be avoided if the mother sought advice from a dentist.
Due to the hormonal changes during pregnancy, most mothers suffer from dental complications. Some may suffer from tooth decay, cavities and gum diseases during the pregnancy, and may lose several teeth in the process. The best way to avoid such complications is by visiting a prenatal doctor or dentist regularly for advice or supplements to quash these hormones.
Gingivitis is an oral condition characterized by red and swollen gums, extreme tenderness and bleeding through the gums most of the times. It is very common in pregnant women though can be prevented through proper oral hygiene. This can be achieved through flossing, brushing regularly and having your gums checked and treated for the infection.
Periodontal diseases are mainly caused by an untreated gingivitis infection, leaving gums and teeth exposed to bacterial. It is far much worse than gingivitis, as the bacteria eats away gum tissues, and may enter the bloodstream causing more problems. Periodontal diseases may also induce early labor due to the toxins released in the blood stream. Most premature births are believed to be caused by this, and this can be prevented if one attends prenatal clinics and sees a dentist regularly for professional help.
These are non-cancerous growths that may appear on ones gums. These are mainly caused by untreated dental plaques, or gingivitis. This condition is however preventable through regular dental and prenatal visits care. The tumors eventually go away naturally once the baby is born, but the pains may persist until the condition has cleared completely.
Improved oral health
Dental hygiene regimen is often administered to pregnant mothers for overall improved oral health. Dentists will recommend flossing and brushing teeth twice a day to help inhibit gingivitis and other dental conditions.
Some mothers vomit a lot throughout the gestation period. This exposes tooth enamel to stomach acids that may corrode it leading to tooth cavities. This can however be avoided by flossing and rinsing your mouth with pure water to get rid of the acidic solution from the mouth. Dentist will also recommend toothpaste that doesn't contain acidic solutions that may cause enamel corrosion.
Proper dieting is also recommended for pregnant mothers to facilitate dental care. One way to ensure good oral hygiene is by avoiding sweet and sugary foods, and taking Vitamin C and Calcium supplements. The reason why you should take calcium and vitamin supplements, is because the fetus growing inside drains the body off these essentials, making the mother's body susceptible and vulnerable to infections. Since pregnant mothers are not allowed to purchase drugs over the counter, the only way to gain access to these supplements is by visiting a dentist, through specialized prenatal care services.
