Tips On How To Deal With Insufficient Sub Floor Ventilation

Inadequate ventilation may lead to a high level of moisture build up especially in the areas you take little consideration of. The underside of the flooring of a house is an example of such places. A sub-floor refers to the crawl space found between the ground and the lower part of a building. It is also known as the basement.

Moisture build up in this area causes fungal decay and invasion of termites. It is clear that the causes of most ventilation problems are found on the outer part of the affected buildings. These areas include the roof water drainage and the surface of the building.

What You Need To Do To Prevent Ventilation Problems

You can try out these useful strategies to avoid ventilation problems:

- Yard drainage - Ensure that the ground surrounding your house is well levelled. This levelling is important in redirecting water away from the house to the main drainage system of the same house. This will help you get rid of water and moisture build up near your house.

- Roof Drainage - Ensure that used water coming from your house does not flood the soils around your house. This can be done by redirecting all house water coming for the gutters and the roofs to the required drainage system of the house.

- Before the construction of a new house, the outer part of the foundation should be carefully sealed. Installing a high quality perimeter drain system for your house is highly recommended. Install a drainage system that is meant for gutters and underground pipes alone.

If you would like to have your sub-floors remain dry, here are the precautions you will need to keep in mind:

- Headroom - When constructing your house, ensure that the crawl space has enough headroom. This means that the size increases a little to promote more air circulation. This will also make the maintenance and repair of the underground pipes simple.

- Venting - Ensure that the sub floors have enough vents that will promote ventilation of air inside the sub-floors. Sub floors without the right ventilation will have an unpleasant odour after some time.

- Storage - Do not use the small crawl spaces in your house for storage as this will worsen the situation. The space is too small to act as a storage area and can be a breeding ground for pests like rodents if it is used for storage. Furthermore, using the space for storage will drastically reduce the crucially needed circulation of air.

These are important tips that will help you deal with inadequate sub floor ventilation. If followed to the letter, you will be free from health issues and the damage that comes with moisture build up. Following these guidelines will help you promote the durability of your property and you will also be able to cut down on costs that you would have used to solve an already done damage. Always remember to engage a qualified ventilation expert while dealing with the ventilation problems in your home. They are in a better position to handle all the situations.
