;-) wink (light sarcasm)

:-| indifference

:-> devilish grin (heavy sarcasm)

8-) eye-glasses

:-D shock or surprise

:-/ perplexed

:-( frown (anger or displeasure)

:-P wry smile

;-} leer

:-Q smoker

:-e disappointment

:-@ scream

:-O yell

:-* drunk

:-{} wears lipstick

:- male

>- female

The above abbreviations and emoticons were presented for your knowledge and enjoyment only. I highly recommend you use these sparingly, if at all, since not everyone knows what they mean.

There are hundreds of these things and their translations are by no means universal (a mis-interpreted smiley could lead to a flame).

Ooops, sorry! Here's the definition of flame: name- calling, personal insults, verbal attacks, trying to start a fight with someone, to criticize harhly in an e- mail.

?    by Dean Phillips I recently received an unsolicited e-mail from some company offering me their search engine optimization services for $199. Even though I had absolutely no interest in the offer, just out of curiosity, I tried clicking on the URL they provided in their e-mail. The URL didn't work, so I decided to check out this company with the various search engines. Incredibly, they were nowhere to be found! I couldn't find them on Google, Yahoo, Dogpile, anywhere! That's because they...

?   by Dean PhillipsMale. Obsessed with computers. Lacking a girlfriend. Aged 14 to 34. Capable of creating chaos worldwide. The above description is the profile of the average computer-virus writer, according to Jan Hruska, the chief executive of British-based Sophos PLC, the world's fourth-largest anti-virus solutions provider. Google s Trap DMOZ s Nap And Yahoo s Crap
by Dean PhillipsOn November 16th, 2003, Google commenced an update (the Florida update) which had a catastrophic effect for a very large number of websites and, in the process, turned search engine optimization upside down. It is common to give alphabetical names to Google's updates in the very same way that names are given to hurricanes, and this one became known as Florida. In a nutshell, a vast number of pages, many of which had ranked at or near the top of the results for a very long...
