Some people have suggested that Atlanta schools should require students to wear school uniforms to combat the problem of "fashion bullying." This refers to a situation where a student is picked on because of the type or label of clothing they wear. Jealousies are common among students over clothing and appearance.
Problem with Bullying in Atlanta Schools Deeper than Just Clothes
I can understand someone thinking that if kids going to Atlanta schools are being picked on because of their clothes, then mandating that all students must wear a uniform will solve the problem. It is my belief that the bullying in Atlanta schools (and schools nationwide) runs much deeper than the clothes being worn by a student. If we try to solve the problem in this way, we are only dealing with a symptom, not the underlying issues.
Students often "vent" the challenges and pressures of student lifestyle by expressing their individuality in different ways. Some of it is healthy and some if it is not. Whether it is the amount of makeup or type of jewelry they wear or unusual hairstyles or colors, diverse clothing, within moral bounds, is a healthy release for many. If a school wants to adopt a uniform policy, that policy needs more substance than being a band aid to deeper issues.
Attitude Changes Need to be Taught at Atlanta Schools
Instead of trying to offer a Band Aid solution to the bullying problem Atlanta schools should consider a new stronger and harsher policy against bullies and bullying. This behavior may have always gone on at Atlanta schools (and schools everywhere) but that doesn't make it acceptable. There needs to be clear guidelines about what constitutes bullying and consequences for that type of behavior.
All students at Atlanta schools need to be held responsible for the behavior choices they make. The decision to pick on someone because of their clothes, their height, weight, race, sexual orientation, or any other factor is one that the bully chose to make. Students going to Atlanta schools need to learn how to take responsibility for their actions and the schools must make the consequences of bullying harsh and unpleasant.
Schools are designed to prepare kids for adulthood not only in the area of academics but also in the area of social behavior and understanding. This is a key component of education over all. Instead of taking away an item a bully can use as an excuse (which will be replaced with another unreasonable excuse a bully will find) address the bully. So if part of the reason why children to go Atlanta schools is to learn how to behave in the big world outside of school, then one item of focus should be to treat fellow students with respect, no matter what they happen to be wearing.
If we decide to "solve" the problem of bullying by making it more difficult for bullies to find things to pick at fellow students for, then the problem hasn't really been solved. The only way to change the environment at Atlanta schools is to start with the students themselves. Bullies are the ones with the problem and we need to look at solving it from that point of view, not by making all students wear a uniform.

Virginia Schools Students Face New Type Of Study Program This Fall
Virginia schools students recently have returned to school. Along with the studies and coursework they expected to face, they have a new program with which to deal a bullying prevention program.
Bullies are prevalent in all schools today. It has been a growing problem for the past decade. The emotional trauma experienced by victims of bullying is, in some cases, beyond belief. The results of bullying, both upon the victim and the bully, also are significant. We have seen some of these...
Distinct Services Available In Orlando Schools
Any school district, whether it serves the tiniest of rural communities, or the students of a huge city, must effectively communicate with its parents. Individual schools stay in touch with families most commonly through newsletters, web pages, and sometimes via e-mail. Teachers in Orlando Schools conduct parent-teacher conferences a minimum of once a year, make phone calls as needed, and send home comments about their students' progress on report cards and mid-term reports.

Overcrowding A Problem For Some Los Angeles Schools
A long time ago, kids went to school in a one-room schoolhouse. Kids ranged in age from around 7 to 16, and were all taught by the same teacher. In the cities, schools were mostly run by religious organizations or sometimes the town's city council took over the responsibility of educating the young people.
As our population has increased, the need for more teachers and more classrooms and even more school buildings has grown exponentially. Nowhere is that more evident than in Los Angeles...
Dress Code Is New Hot Button For The Houston Schools
School dress codes have been around for decades, but they gained more prominence in schools and are stricter in recent years in response to the permeation of gangs and violence within the schools at all levels. In addition to maintaining modesty within the schools, dress codes now ban gang paraphernalia, colors and symbols; shirts with writing; head coverings; and other such accessories that have been linked to gangs or school violence.
Though all of the Houston schools have dress codes, each...
Should San Diego Schools Students Pray
The San Diego Schools were put in the national spotlight this past July when it was revealed that Carver Elementary Schools was allowing Muslim students a 15 minute timeframe to pray. Carver has recently acquired about 100 Muslim students from a San Diego Schools charter school that closed. Even so, this revelation created uproar on the ever popular subject of prayer in school.
There are a few schools of thought on this subject. One camp feels that religion shouldn't have any place in...
The San Jose Schools Struggle With Charters
The San Jose Schools have struggled for years to find ways to address educational issues in the city. While there is a lot of room for criticism in any urban school district, you can't say that the San Jose Unified School District hasn't tried a lot of different angles for success. The diversity in the San Jose Schools, with a significant percentage of Spanish and Vietnamese speaking families, can be part of the problem when communicating with parents and building successful schools. That's...
Minneapolis Public Schools Lose Students To Charter Schools
Students are Fleeing Minneapolis Schools
Minneapolis schools are being faced with the prospect of empty school buildings as more and more students flee the system to charter schools in the district. Minneapolis schools' enrollment figures have plummeted to just 36,000 this year - that's almost half its capacity of 50,000 students. Schools in the north side have felt the pinch the hardest with a 44 percent drop in enrollment over the past five years. All indications are that there is no...
Magnets In The St Louis Schools
Just like any other big city the St. Louis Schools in Missouri have some challenges in educating the city's youngest population. Religious and private schools are an option for many. The public St. Louis Public Schools don't have the best reputation. Charter schools and magnet schools are both alternatives to the traditional model of St. Louis Schools.
St. Louis Schools offer charters, independently run institutions, as one version of school choice. The problem with charter schools anywhere...
