Healthy Eating Hacks for Teens

Do you have a sweet tooth? Are you constantly munching away? Are you eating things that are not great for your health? Not to worry. Whether you have sweet or savoury cravings, we are here to help you make healthier choices. Nobody wants to put on unhealthy weight and nobody wants an unhealthy mind.

Letâs talk substitutes!

⢠Chocolate! Who doesnât love chocolate? This is a common craving to have and the easiest way to combat this is to consume a few pieces of dark chocolate. As dark chocolate is very rich, you will not want to eat this in large amounts anyway but the few pieces you do have will satisfy your taste buds.

⢠Fizzy Drinks! These are full of sugar and personally this is what I struggle staying away from the most. Good alternatives to fizzy drinks are: coconut water, sparkling water and fruit infused water. Coconut water is sweet enough to fight the sugar cravings but is also full of benefits. Fruit infused water is a good way to incorporate water into your diet if you do not like it plain. Not only will the fruit bring some flavour but can also act a detox for your body. Drinking more water or other healthier fluids will reduce your urge to drink fizzy drinks.

⢠Fruit! Not only is this healthy but they also contain high sugar content. This will help calm any cravings for sugary foods and you do not have to make it boring. There are plenty ways in which you can incorporate fruit into your diet. Make a smoothie, add it to an acai bowl or a bowl of cereal or porridge and eat the fruit with a side like peanut butter or chocolate. Some fruit that are rich in sugars are: berries, pomegranates and bananas.

⢠Dates! These will definitely satisfy your cravings. Dates are very sweet and contain plenty of nutrients. Be careful not to overdo it with the dates as they can make your teeth ache.

⢠Potatoes! Who doesnât love potatoes? Whether that is chips, crisps or mashed potatoes. A healthier alternative for regular fries is sweet potato fries. Sweet potato is less fattening and is healthier for you. As for mashed potatoes, a good replacement is mash cauliflower. They have way less calories and as cauliflower is a vegetable it also contains plenty of fibre and nutrients. Some good alternatives to crisps are rice cakes and vegetable based crisps which are now widely available.

Healthy eating tips and tricks

Keep hydrated. Your body and brain needs water to function how it should. A lack of water in your system can cause numerous problems.

Do not have such a high caffeine intake. Teenagers tend to drink a lot of energy drinks but avoid them where possible. Do not make it a regular habit as it can cause restlessness. Other products that will contribute to your caffeine intake are coffee and fizzy drinks. Keep them on a limit too.

During meal times, make sure that you are eating well. By this, I mean have a good amount of protein, carbohydrates and veg. This will fuel your body properly and will also reduce the amount of snacks you have per day.

And last but not least, do not totally cut out fats and sugary products out of your diet! This can be quite unhealthy for your body as it still requires fats and sugars in small doses. If you are craving something, eat it but do not over indulge as this can make you feel quite sluggish. However, if you are feeling extremely well behaved, attempt in finding healthier substitutes.


Remember a healthy body equals a healthy mind which will inevitably result in better academic performance. Never neglect your health as it can cost you!
