Indian political system is changing drastically and at this moment having the right civic education more than just the knowledge from civics textbook from school, is a must. The most basic interpretation of civic education is the provision of information and processes related to democracy and an opportunity to take part in them. It is also known as citizen education or democracy education. The main aim and objective of imparting civic education is to create awareness and consciousness amongst the citizens of our country through various means. Respect for law, which is one of the objectives of civics education, calls not for blind submission to rules and laws already passed but the ability to participate in drawing them up.
The values of civic education and importance of civic education is to maximize participation of people in the activities of government. Supporting democratic governance and understanding of own civic and political rights is mandate to contribute in making of a good governance. Civic responsibilities and citizenship are two strongest pillars which help in solving of social, political and governance issues. Civic education also has three major elements- civic knowledge, civic skills and civic disposition.
Aims and objectives of civic education include promoting and understanding of ideas of democracy and functioning of democratic governing bodies. Role of civic education must be realistic and topics under civic education should include existing accomplishments and setbacks of a democratic system. The relationship between civic education and democracy is transparent and complementary. Civic education gives an insight into the democracy.
Civic education can be pursued through civics textbooks of school, civics textbook online, newspapers, informal lectures, campaigns and by other means of media. The main target of civic education curriculum includes youth generally from the age of 10-35. However, the approaches of civic chapter can be manipulated by several means. Thus, verification of civility of any piece of information is a must.
The classroom based learning through civic education textbooks, notes, syllabus, and projects is done widely in many educational institutions. But apart from the usual pen and paper implementation, various activities need to be conducted. Civic engagement project ideas, civic engagement activities for youth concerning the topics of civic education can be done by mock parliamentary debates, holding of institutional elections, creating a mock governance system, making civic education more interesting. Civic education programs in high schools such as setting up of governing boards with representatives of pupils and staff, and other bodies in which pupils express their views and in which decisions are taken in consultation with everyone, both young people and adults is beneficial. A credible civics education, respect for others â€“ students and teachers, administrators and non-teaching staff employees - and non-violence in attitudes and behaviour must be the rule in schools.
The change in the countryâ€™s future will only take place if the importance of civic education in schools and societies is understood and well perceived by people in the society.
