Information about the nationâÄôs institutions, nationâÄôs working, fundamental duties, fundamental rights, human rights education is vital and forms part of any citizenship education course. There should also be well-established interdependence between human rights and civil rights which are exercised after obtaining citizenship education. Importance of citizenship education is interlinked with human rights in a wider perspective.
Citizenship education in India has enhanced democracy and has inculcated patriotism in the youth. Civics textbooks are akin to civics and citizenship education textbooks which have citizenship education curriculum. However, the concept of citizenship education in India is veiled in all the frontiers of the subject âÄėSocial ScienceâÄô as the citizenship studies possess a deeper belief and understanding.

Citizenship education program has, therefore, three main objectives:
âóŹ educating citizens in citizenship and human rights through a better viewpoint of the government principles and governing institutions of India
âóŹ Learning to exercise oneâÄôs fundamental rights, fundamental duties and being a constructive critical faculty of the existing norms.
âóŹ Acquiring a sense of responsibility towards oneâÄôs country and contributing to its development.
Thus, Citizenship education should indeed be a part of every education system and teaching programmes as it provides a new path to peace, human rights education and democracy. After all, Nelson Mandela once said, âÄúEducation is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the worldâÄĚ.
