The human kidney is one of the major organs in the body that is needed to live. There are two found in the human body, and they can become damaged, inflamed, and diseased. One of the major maladies that affect this organ is that of kidney disease. Itâs also known as nephropathy or renal disease and it can be a serious ailment that leads to death. There are a lot of causes that can be explored in this arena, and when severe enough, could require a kidney transplant.
Understanding The Symptoms
The hard part about this issue is in the symptoms. Many people will show no major symptoms at all. In fact, there will be a great number of people that will not be able to detect diagnosis without a bit of help. Itâs an interesting issue that can be somewhat difficult to deal with, but there are ways to denote whether or not there is a problem.
If symptoms manifest, they will do so slowly, and without warning. There are several whole body functions that can be affected including lack of urine production. Itching, severe weight loss, bloating, and water imbalance are part of these symptoms. Aside from those, high blood pressure, loss of appetite, and heart issues can manifest as well. These are all signs that may or may not show up as a result of kidney problems, which is why itâs imperative that individuals visit a physician and get annually checkups, as well as blood work done. Lab work will indicate whether or not an individual does in fact have kidney problems overall.
There is a lot of different root causes that can create problems within the kidney. The major issues may start with the overuse of analgesics. Abuse of over the counter pain relievers put pressure on the kidney and can cause a reaction that leaves diseased tissue in the kidneys. Other main causes include diabetes, diet and exercise issues, lithium medications, toxicity, and physical damage to the kidney areas. Thereâs also cancers, growths, and lead exposure that could be the main problem. These can all be determined by a doctor, and usually requires blood work to figure out what exactly is going on overall.
The Treatment Options
In regards to treatment options, thereâs a lot to consider. First, the root cause must be known. A doctor cannot start any type of treatment if they donât focus on the root causes to help with creating a solution. In some instances, diseased kidneys will need to be removed, assuming one is healthy. If both are damaged by this issue, then a transplant will be needed. There are tens of thousands of patients across the United States that are waiting for a transplant, and thousands that die on the list.
At the end of the day, the biggest element to consider is prevention. However, when disease sets in, the only major element that can be pursued is that of transplant, which is difficult, with a waiting list that could very well be out of the reach of most.
