Soon after its independence, India set up its Planning Commission that marked the beginning of a new era in its economy. Among its other objectives, the Commission was not only to take stock of the countryâs various resources, but also to find possibilities of expanding them, specially in the areas wherein India was deficient. India launched its First Five Year Plan on April 1, 1951 â making the most effective use of the-then-accessible resources. Since then, eleven Five Year Plans have been completed. And the Twelfth Five Year Plan (2012-13 to 2016-17) is underway. Here is presented a comprehensive account of all significant aspects of Economic Planning in India â highlighting the structural changes that have transformed India from a traditional agricultural economy to a technologically strong, industrially diversified, and militarily an impressive nation.
Schematically, Volume 1 covers the first two Five Year Plans, while Volume 2 Third Plan to the Eighth. In Volume 3 are set out the remaining four Five Year Plans, including the ongoing Twelfth (2012-13 to 2016-17). In the prefatory chapters, the book examines Indiaâs Five Year Plans vis--vis the determinants and constraints of its economic development, its human and natural resources, the problems and issues confronting its developmental efforts, the institutional framework of its plans, the areas of its serious concern, and, among other aspects, what these plans have achieved. In addition, the book also takes a look at the economic reforms in India since the 1990s, their future prospects and challenges. Also incorporated here, besides the sector-wise summary of each Five Year Plan, the sector-wise edited extracts from each plan.
