UEFA at a Glance
UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) is responsible for the Champions League where fifty three associate members play a major role in its successful conduct. The Executive Committee headed by its president decides on the schedule, prize money, various rules etc. UEFA is now headed by the former French footballer, Michel Platini.
UEFA, since its inception 58 years ago, has evolved as an organization and has done its bit in developing football and popularize it in Europe.
The Champions League, So Far
The tournament which used to be knock-out competition among the member countries has evolved to become a structured tournament where round-robin formats have also been incorporated including several other teams. The tournament is conducted in several stages where qualifying rounds in knockout format and playoff rounds are present.
The seeded teams will be playing against the qualifying teams which are usually the ten who survive the various knockout matches. They are split in such a way that there are eight groups with four teams in each of them.
The famous clubs who have made a mark in the tournament includes Real Madrid who has won the title more than anyone else, a legendary nine times since its inception. The current champions are Chelsea, who won last year beating Bayern Munich on penalty shootout. The matches attract heavy viewership both on Television and live inside the stadium. The last year’s final was even watched by the leaders of Germany.
The tournament is completely owned and controlled by UEFA. This ensured that all the matches played including league matches are conducted in confirmation to its motto “We care about Football”. All the match officials including referees, on field umpires are trained and are in highest fitness levels. This ensures that the matches are played in the right spirit and in accordance to the rules. The prize money structure is such that at every stage of the tournament, winners are identified and cash prizes are awarded ensuring highest motivation levels among the teams.
Champions League, the Year Ahead
The Year Ahead is exciting for football fans as usual. The Champions League Tickets are up for sale and plans are afoot to make this year’s tournament better than last year. The tournament is held from December in many countries including Spain, Ukraine, Portugal, and Turkey until the finals in May at the Wembley Arena, London, UK.
